Biography

Michael Winchell is an instructor in AP US Government and Politics and in Honors Economics at Trinity Hall. He joined the faculty in 2021.
 
Michael holds a M.A. in English from UNC Greensboro and a Master of Economics from North Carolina State University.   Michael began his career in finance as an economist at Merrill Lynch after teaching economics and statistics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.  
 
Michael was Chief Risk Officer of Bear Stearns & Co. until 1999.  He also served as head of International Fixed Income Trading and served on the firm's Risk, Funding and Credit Committees. In 1997, he was elected to the Bear Stearns’ Board of Directors.  He co-authored Benchmarks for Stochastic Models, published in the Journal of Portfolio Management in 1991, and Understanding Inverse Floater Pricing, published in the Handbook of Mortgage Securities in 1992.
 
Michael serves All-Star Code as Board Chair and was formerly a board member of both the Greater New York Council, BSA, and Monmouth Council, BSA.  He is a past president of the Duryea Navesink Library Association and currently an emeritus member of Columbia University’s College Board of Visitors.
 
With his wife Donna, Michael established the William D. Toussaint Graduate Fellowship at NC State University which supports up to seven graduate students annually.
