Trinity Hall produces a growing number of committed collegiate athletes with each graduating class. One student in particular from the Class of ‘23 is a lacrosse player, Peyton McGuire. Peyton’s dedication to both athletics and academics allowed her to commit to the University of Chicago the summer before her senior year of high school. She is completing her first term as a freshman and provided what a day in her life looks like as a student athlete at a prestigious university.
Peyton has a rigorous schedule; a typical day for her starts with waking up at 6 a.m. and getting ready for team lift. Then she walks 20 minutes to the training facilities and lifts for an hour before going back to her dorm and showering. After that, Peyton usually meets her friends at Starbucks, where they have a study group until 10:30 a.m. From there, she attends her classes from 11 a.m. until 12:20 p.m., and breaks for lunch with the lacrosse team. Following her meal, Peyton goes to one of the many libraries on campus, and studies until about 2:15 p.m. Her afternoon classes typically end around 4:15 p.m. When they are completed, she walks back to her dorm and puts on her practice uniform. Next, Peyton goes to lacrosse practice from 5 to 7 p.m. and enjoys dinner with her team. After dinner, she studies and catches up on homework before going to bed at 10:30 p.m.
Although she has a lot of demands regarding homework, studying and lacrosse, Peyton feels that she was well-prepared to attend the University of Chicago because of the four years she spent at Trinity Hall.
She said, “My experience at Trinity Hall was very impactful as it prepared me for the academically rigorous environment of UChicago. I have to apply my time management and study habits from high school to college, which has definitely benefited me at UChicago.”
Additionally, Peyton explained her ability to balance being a student-athlete while also being able to spend time with her friends and its impact on understanding herself as a person. She said, “Being a student athlete at the University of Chicago has been a great experience so far. It is definitely a lot of hard work, but I feel that the balance of being a student-athlete has taught me a lot about myself, especially regarding my mental toughness on and off the field. I also feel like being a student-athlete has made me realize the type of routine I need to establish early on in my college career in order to succeed in school, but also have time for myself and be present with my friends and my sport.”
Overall, Peyton is an amazing role model for current students at Trinity Hall, as she is hardworking and dedicated to both lacrosse and her studies at UChicago. The Trinity Hall community is excited to see the wonderful things Peyton will accomplish at UChicago and beyond.
