On December 15, four Trinity Hall seniors attended the Shore Conference Captains Conference. Madeline B., Anna C., Haven D., and Olivia H. gathered with student captains from other high schools in the Shore Conference at Freehold Township High School. Olivia H, captain of our swim team said, “This conference was a great opportunity for captains from the conference to get together and get to know one another without the stress of competition.”
At the conference, the students listened to a speech by King Rice, the head coach of Monmouth University's men’s basketball team. He gave an inspiring speech about leadership to the high schoolers. He told them about his journey to becoming a basketball coach and gave them advice on how to be an effective leader for their teams. The speech resonated with our captains, leaving them with skills they can put into practice.
Madeline B., captain of the winter track team, expressed her thoughts on the speech. “I thought Coach Rice was an extremely effective speaker and took away a couple of lessons. He reminded us to check ourselves and our teams on good days, even more so than on bad days, as we are under more pressure to succeed during these times.” The speech left Madeline with ideas that she will “definitely be passing along to the running program at Trinity Hall!"
Olivia H. added, “Coach Rice convinced each of us that with the paths we are on, we have the capabilities to change the world and to not lose sight of that as we advance in our athletic and academic careers… I think it made other captains realize that sports are about far more than just the action of the sport, but the skills you are building while playing.”
The Captains Conference allowed our student captains to connect with other winter sports players and leaders outside of the competition space. Building leadership skills off the court, field, track, or ice is essential for our captains to be successful in their role, and this conference gave our captains the opportunity to do so.
